First Impressions

Do first impressions really last? Probably, but not all the time.

Sure, we do have our first impressions when we meet someone new. But the more we get to know them, the more we believe that there is really more than what meets the eye.

A number of people I know confessed their first impressions on me. (I think I am carrying my own chair - translation: binubuhat ang sariling bangko!) This is usually after they have been exposed to who I really am. Their usual first impressions of me? That I’m serious, shy, and even a snob!

No, I don’t take it against me. Actually, those impressions amuse me. Just right after they confess their impressions, they admittedly say that I am not what they really thought of at first.

Serious? Well, I do think I am. But not that serious! A classmate of mine even told me that because of his impression of me, he makes sure that he carefully thinks first of what he wants to say to me. And now, he doesn’t need much serious thinking. Hmm .. I am not sure if that is a complement … hehe!

Shy? In one way or another I think I am. Generally, people don’t really think that I could be really talkative. And more than that, I could really be one corny person. Modesty aside, I could make you laugh with my antics. I probably got this from my dad .. hehe. A friend even made a comment that I could be a cure for frustrated comedians for I laugh even at the corniest jokes. Of course, it’s in my league! Aside from that, I usually get a kick whenever I go out and have some fun with a bunch of friends for the first time. Take for example, a videoke night (just like Saturday, with my classmates). Anyhow, I am not sure what they were seriously thinking when they challenged me to really sing. Ako pa? I do not have a great voice, just enough to cause some rainshowers .. hehe. I get by with my performance, so to speak. Some were in a daze when I chose to sing Sk8r Boi by Avril Lavigne and Halaga (a favorite of mine) by Parokya ni Edgar. They didn’t think that I was that kind of person who would choose to sing such songs. And I don’t blame them. Of course, just to up my antics, I sang Kisapmata ala Bamboo/Rico Blanco. Just imagine how Rico or Bamboo (oi, close) holds the microphone and closes his eyes when he sings. Rockin’ isn’t it?

Snob? I can’t blame others if they think I am such person. From a distance, I could really be .. with my eyeglasses, thick brows (sometimes arched) and not much smile. Kulang na lang eh naka-bun an buhok ko! And why would I smile to a person I don’t know? Right?

Basically, first impressions are really based on one’s physical attributes. And when one gets to hang out with each other, one discovers that there is really more to than first impressions. It’s not that I am proving that others are wrong, because they are not. It just goes to show that it is nice to discover, explore and experience one another.
